Is there a reason why sad songs always get you to feel down even when you're happy?

I hate putting myself in this position. When I'm happy, and listen to a sad song, it always gets me to think about all the sad depressing thoughts, and just throws me into the dumps. Is there like a reason the mind does this? Thanks in advance.

  1. Its the beat, take the words out and your heart-rate will lower to a slower song. Now your brain interprets the words and sets the stage of any type of low emotion like sadness, lonliness, tiredness etc.... I read an article that says if you want productive employees, play 80"s music because it elevates the heart-rate and makes their brain believe they can work as fast as the music.
  2. when your around negative people you become more negative. songs are the same way
  3. It's really not a power the song has, it's just how your brain interprets it. The composer also uses certain techniques in his/her writing to achieve this effect. I believe it has to do with the level of empathy a person possesses also, and your brain is sympathizing with the song so you also become saddened. It's not a bad thing really, you can actually feel a song more than most people. An excellent trait if you are a musician:)
